Missoula's trees look great in October. Then they drop everything, usually right before it rains, and a light layer of dry leaves turns into a heavy, soggy mat. Here's why it matters and how to get it done faster.

Why you can't just leave them

A thin layer of leaves isn't a big deal. A thick layer is. Once it's wet and packed down, it blocks sunlight, holds moisture against the grass, and stays that way all winter under the snow. That creates the perfect conditions for snow mold and dead patches. Clearing the leaves before the snow sticks means a much better lawn in spring.

Mulch, rake, or bag?

Mulch mow if the layer is light. Running the mower over dry leaves chops them into small pieces that break down and feed the soil. If you can see grass through the shredded bits, you're fine.

Rake or blow if the layer is thick. Too many leaves to mulch will still smother the lawn.

Bag or haul what you can't mulch. Check the city's current yard waste options before you haul.

Tools that make it faster

A sturdy, wide leaf rake handles wet valley leaves much better than a cheap plastic one. For bigger yards, a cordless leaf blower cuts the job way down. If you are hauling leaves to compost, paper yard bags are usually easier than plastic, but check the drop-off site's rules first.

Tips for an easier cleanup

Work with the wind, not against it.
Go on a dry day. Dry leaves weigh a fraction of wet ones.
Do two rounds if you have big trees: once midway through the drop, and once after the last leaves fall.
Don't forget the beds, gutters, and window wells.
